The colorful opening ceremony of the 112 th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Manila went on smoothly last sunday with a little over 1,000 delegates in attendance.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo joined IPU President, Chilean Senator Sergio Paez Verdugo, and IPU Secretary-General Anders Johnsson in the opening ceremony at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Sunday evening.
On the second day of the conference , more delegates continue to arrive in Manila to participate in the series of sessions on human rights, women’s rights, poverty, terrorism, and other contemporary global issues at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) until Friday, April 8 th .
PNP Chief, Director General Arturo C Lomibao earlier instructed Deputy Director General Reynaldo V Velasco, head of the PNP Task Force Parliament to provide close-in security to all delegates who will wish to visit other places in the city.
Director General Carmen R Arceno, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for the 112 th IPU Assembly said recent terrorist threats and the travel advisories on the Philippines by some countries did not have any direct effect on the turnout of participant to the conference.
