Maori Angels to descend upcoming art market

Visitors and locals alike will be able to take home their very own symbol of Aotearoa mythology with the Maori Angel clay pieces created by Auckland local and contemporary Maori clay artist Carla Ruka.

Ruka who will be exhibiting a range of clay works at the upcoming Maori Art Market has received high praise from Maori Art Market’s creative director Darcy Nicholas.

“Any worthwhile art work should show the personality, the hands, the skill, and the individual imagery of the artist creator. Carla Ruka’s art are self portraits of a sensitive, highly skilled and loving young mother. We have four of her art works in the Nicholas collection,” Mr Nicholas says.

Ruka says that she’s very excited to be exhibiting her works among so many talented people at the largest ever contemporary Maori arts show in Porirua City October 6th -9th.

“The Maori Art Market is an event with an atmosphere that’s alive with talented artists and buzzes with an excited audience, “ Ruka says.

The contemporary Maori clay artist who gets her inspiration and ideas from her ancestors was introduced to clay in 2000 and never looked back.

“I love the journey that comes from creating my visions from Papatuanuku. From the earth to the creation to the firing everything is an exciting event and you’re forever learning something new,” Ruka says.

Ruka has been working on a selection of smaller pieces this year, including Maori Angels which she will be exhibiting at the Maori Art Market.

“I have always had a fascination with angels, a renowned being of serenity, perfection and peace. A close friend would tell me beautiful stories from her home about their angels, so, as a visual person I wanted to create them, ” Ruka says.
